Community Presentations and Seminar Abstracts

I spend a lot of time running our company and on the road, including hosting SQLLunch.com events with Patrick Leblanc. In between trips, I can often be found at different user groups, conferences, SQL Saturday and Code Camp Events. I enjoy the Virtual and In-Person Events as they each present their own types of questions and participants. (See blog for schedule) Below are abstracts for the more common presentations I give:

Introduction to SQL Server Analysis Services

Let’s dive in together and learn about how SSAS and OLAP can make deliver actionable intelligence to your end users in a fraction of the time and effort of traditional reporting techniques. This all demo session will get you started and answer many questions you have about what SSAS is and what it can do for you.

Zero to Cube in 60 Minutes

Overcome the barriers of traditional training and seminars with this Quick Start to building a cube. This all demo session will get you started and answer many questions you have about building cubes the right way, the first time.

Dimensional Modeling Basics

Your last name does not have to be Kimball to build sound data warehouses. Learn the basics of Dimensional Modeling and some techniques to make your DW, ETL, and OLAP layers work better together. This is a very interactive and demo rich session.

Performance Tuning SQL Server Analysis Services

Could your cube processing use some acceleration? Do your ad-hoc SSAS queries perform slower than you would like?  Let Industry expert Adam Jorgensen, President of Pragmatic Works Consulting and SQL Server expert for over 15 years show you the best ways to troubleshoot, optimize and accelerate your SSAS queries.  We will cover using all the SQL Server and Windows Server tools to dig in and find the problems with your SSAS processing and query performance.

SQL Server Analysis Services Storage and Processing Techniques

Storage and Processing are two of the most misunderstood areas of SSAS. This interactive session is driven by user questions and a best practices review/application to enable users to leave feeling they can make an immediate impact for their organizations.

Introduction to MDX (Multi-Dimensional Expressions)

MDX is a powerful language and a required tool for working in an OLAP environment. This all demo session will include an introduction to the fundamentals of the language, examples of common uses, and query structure and application. It is designed to give attendees a base level of confidence to go begin trying their own hand at this exciting and powerful language.

Common MDX Calculations and their Solutions

There are a host of common calculations done in business and many of these can be made easier, faster, and more manageable by using MDX instead of T-SQL. In this application based session, we will explore these in areas such as finance, inventory management, sales, market basket analysis, and more, giving users the right ways to perform such calculations in their environments.

Using MDX in SQL Server Analysis Services

Now that you’re familiar with MDX and its constructs, we can jump into using it in SSAS for things like Actions, KPI’s (Key Performance Indicators), and other powerful options. This demo rich session focuses on publicly available data so that you can reproduce the results on your own after the session.

BI in Real Time

Have you wanted to take your BI infrastructure and implementation to the next level? Do your users want their data faster, with less latency? Are you tired of telling them they have to wait 15-30 minutes (or longer) to see what their company is doing? Authors, speakers, consultants and community pillar Adam Jorgensen co-host of SQLLunch.com, put his decades of  expertise to work discussing and demonstrating techniques to deliver data in real time to reporting applications and dashboards.

Delivering World Class Presentations

Have you always wondered why people stand in line to see Steve Ballmer or Bill Gates speak? It’s not just because they drive the technology and innovations of tomorrow, it’s because their presentations are dynamic, down to earth and make the concepts real to their audience. You too can deliver these types of presentations. Come listen to experts lay out the plan for a successful presentation that you could deliver at a user group, conference, webinar or boardroom. Learn techniques from those who helped write them through building the SQL Server Community. This session is led by Adam Jorgensen, data systems expert and management guru with experience in major industries over his 15 years.
